Muay Thai
Muay Thai for Fitness and Self-defense
History
Originally derived from a form of hand-to-hand combat in Thailand, contemporary Muay Thai has been adapted for use for everything from kick boxing training to ring fighting to health exercise and military training. Because Muay Thai is a very demanding martial art that requires extensive physical conditioning, these requirements also make Muay Thai training an excellent exercise for those looking to focus on fitness and weight loss.
Muay Thai Classes
At K-1 fitness, our Muay Thai kickboxing classes are focused on helping you to achieve your personal fitness goals—whether as a mixed martial arts fighter or as an individual striving for personal fitness. Our San Francisco Bay Area facility is proud to feature renowned trainer Boi Faphimai from Thailand on staff to help you.
K-ONE FITNESS Muay Thai training classes include:
- Basic punches, footwork, and the “eight points of contact”
- Extensive fitness exercises
- Focus on body conditioning
- Intense workouts
- Self defense training
- Serious but fun instructors
- Improvement in strength and fitness
For the Muay Thai beginner, we recommend jumping right in with our 4-week Muay Thai in San Francisco boxing bootcamp. Boot camp packages also include free fitness tests, nutritional guidance, and free evening classes and complimentary gym membership with access to our Thai boxing equipment during your training.
Says Holly S. (SF) on Yelp, “I am now finishing the fourth week of Muay Thai kickboxing bootcamp, a place I never dreamed I would be at 6:00 a.m. This sort of workout experience was very new to me, but any trepidation quickly vanished minutes into the first class. The instructors are just the right balance of serious and fun and the workout is challenging but also VERY enjoyable (and the hour goes by in a flash!) I like it so much I’m already signed up for the next one. K-One has changed our lives in such a positive way. It’s a SUPER COOL place… Thank you!”
Muay Thai today is Thailand’s official national sport, and has a long history in the country. It evolved from hand-to-hand combat into a sport in which opponents fight each other in front of rings of spectators for entertainment. These Thai boxing events were an important part of celebrations and even entertainment for kings. Today the tradition continues in mixed martial arts competitions (MMA).
As a fighting form, Muay Thai is a full contact martial art. It utilizes what’s called “The Art of the Eight Limbs”—a method of fighting and training using both hands, both elbows, both knees, and both shins—creating eight points of contact instead of the two fist in Western boxing, or the four points of contact in conventional martial arts. Because the practitioner is trained to use and target a larger number of contact points in combat, he/she is able to fight more effectively by using a greater number of moves drawing on combinations of the eight points.
As a style of kick boxing and mixed martial arts, Muay Thai is more technical than most, and the rigorous, progressive workouts bring a very focused method of learning to Muay Thai training. Muay Thai kick boxing is also known for conditioning the body for performance of high endurance, power, and speed. Because of its rigorous physical demands, it’s gained in popularity around the nation as a challenging but rewarding health and fitness regime even amongst noncombatants.
Led by Thai instructor Boi Faphimai, our lead K-1 Fitness Muay Thai trainer, students begin each class learning a series of techniques covering punching (chok), elbow (tee sok), kicking (teh), knee (tee kao), and foot-thrust (teep). After some months of practice, students can implement the new techniques in optional sparring sessions where they have the opportunity to practice techniques against an opponent.
Students in our Muay Thai boxing club, boot camp, and personal training classes are taught not only how to improve on the physical conditioning of their bodies, but to channel their newfound physical discipline into improving their own confidence as well. Instructors at K-1 Fitness believe that physical training should be fun as well as challenging. Our friendly staff is always ready to support each student in achieving personal as well as group goals—from weight loss plans to fight preparation.
Allen S. (SF) from Yelp says, “[I am a] big fan of K1. It’s made working out fun as I’m past doing the regular gym routine. I’ve been doing the Muay Thai boot camp since October and it kicks my butt every morning but I never get bored b/c we’re learning new stuff every week. People here are great too… My fellow classmates are all really chill and it makes for an enjoyable workout. This is great for toning up and burning off the flab.”

How much would it cost to attend the Muay Thai classes. Also I saw on the Home Page that there are MMA Classes but I didn’t see any under the classes section. I’m very interested in doing some type of combat sport in my free time. I really miss Freestyle Wrestling. It’s been quite a long time.
