In the 1990s, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu rose to prominence on the international scene of martial arts when Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert Royce Gracie won three of the first four Ultimate Fighting Championships. Unlike Muay Thai or traditional forms of boxing and kickboxing, Brazilian Ju Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on using grapple, joint lock, and chokehold techniques to overcome an opponent; allowing even smaller fighters to have a distinct advantage. Using this powerful martial art, Gracie soon became famous for his ability to take down and submit opponents much larger than himself.

Traditionally, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighters seek to avoid exchanging punches and kicks with an opponent. Instead of relying on muscular force, Jiu Jitsu developes the use of leverage, limb locks, calm under duress, and the ability to out-wit an opponent (brains over brawn). Because of this, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practice is great for real-life self-defense, even if you’re not an experienced martial artist. Jiu Jitsu students learn many different take down techniques to bring the match to the ground, and participate in live sparring matches in order to build confidence and fluidity. Once on the ground, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners learn how to strategically positions themselves to hold and submit their opponent.
